Thanks to the work of a local dentist, brighter smiles can make a difference in the life of an abuse victim.
Dr. Dana Jones, DDS is one of a handful of dentists around the country participating in a very special program aiming to end the cycle and pain of domestic abuse. As part of the S.M.I.L.E. program, Dr. Jones offers his patients his in-office ZOOM tm or take-home teeth-whitening service and in exchange asks patients to donate the entire cost of the service to the Women In Need (WIN) foundation. WIN is a national non-profit outreach program of counseling for women caught in abusive situations. WIN’s focus is to help the helpless before they find themselves desperate with nowhere to turn—particularly if they have children. With its 20-week counseling Right Living program, WIN is committed to the health, well being, happiness and personal self-esteem of women and children and helps participants move forward to create an abuse-free environment for themselves and their children.
After learning of the program Dr. Jones felt he had to take part. “There’s probably nothing as transformative as a genuine smile. A beautiful smile changes the way you feel and the way others feel about you. This is a chance for me to brighten smiles and help heal wounds at the same time. When I learned that over 4,000 women die each year as a result of beatings, more than auto accidents, muggings, rapes and strangers combined, how could I not try to help?”
The procedure is simple. Patients schedule an appointment with Dr. Jones for a whitening treatment and in exchange for his service, write their checks directly to WIN for the treatment fee amount. This donation is tax deductible and WIN sends the patients an official tax-donation receipt for their tax purposes. The ZOOM tm whitening, as seen on ABC’s Extreme Makeover, is done in Dr. Jones’ office while the take-home whitening kit requires only that patients be fitted for special teeth molds and then take their custom-made teeth whitening trays and supplies home. On their own schedules, patients apply a whitening gel into the trays and then slip the trays over their teeth for a specified time. In both cases, the end result is a brighter smile.
Dr. Jones donates his entire fee amount to WIN, and has committed to raising $10,000 for the foundation this year. In addition to servicing this fundraiser, Dr. Jones is an affiliated dentist for the Mrs. US and Mrs. Globe beauty pageant. The pageant, which raises money for WIN, is the largest international pageant for married women in the world. Its delegates act as WIN spokespersons around the world, sharing the message of hope and healing. By enhancing the smile of a delegate, Dr. Jones joins her and WIN in their quest to end domestic violence.
